Two Dollar Portrait Two Dollar Portrait
One of my favorite photographers, Thomas Hawk, has started a new project on Flickr.  The $2 Portrait Project is a compelling look at people most of us don't even see... until they ask for money.  It's at this point we usually engage an awkward internal debate and then decide that in their best interest, we better not.
 
Well, TH is giving $2 to anyone who asks for money in excahnge for the opportunity to take their portrait.  The outcome is an incredible collection of people... real people.  Not "homeless"... "beggars"... "pandhandlers".... just people.  I love the way he humanizes each and every one by including a part of their story.  The reminder is that at the end of the day, we're all "image-bearers".
 
This morning I ran Into King Don at the West Oakland BART Station. King Don approached me and asked me for money after he saw I was giving money to his friend Melvin for taking his portrait.

King Don is an Oakland native, born and raised and still here. He's a father and a grandfather. He rides a motorized scooter and has been sitting out in front of West Oakland BART every morning for a long time.

When I asked King Don if his first name was King or Don he told me that he was just "King Don" adding, "I'm the king!"

Today was my first day to meet King Don in person even though I've been walking past him on many mornings for a long time.

I havent gotten online in a while so to much surprise i saw that youve updated a couple times so thats awesome
