Kris Kimlin - Losing It

It's been a while since I've posted up a Digital Convo and so I thought I'd fire it back up with a friend of mine, Kris Kimlin.  He's got a pretty cool project in the works so check it out...

losing_it-little_boy-1

DNSLNS:  First all let's just start out with the basics... tell everyone who you and where you're from

Kris:  Well my name is Kristopher Kimlin and I come from the land above...Canada
but I am reformed
so I am a US citizen now
so...suck it Canada!

DNSLNS:  hahaha... nice
Vintage Mr. Kimlin right off the bat. Awesome

Kris:  you know me

DNSLNS:  ok... so your twitter screenname is @filmmakerkimlin. What's that all about?

Kris:  well Dan, I am a filmmaker and a kimlin...pretty self explanitory

DNSLNS:  dude...

Kris:  hahaa

DNSLNS:  ha ha ha
totally stumped me there
ok.. awesome... thanks for breaking that down. Would you care to elaborate? As in... what's the dream man? how'd you get into it... where do you hope to go? then I want to talk a little bit about the project

Kris:  Well, as my twitter would lead you to believe...I love movies and simply enough, I want to make movies. Kinda always have and always will. I remember being a little kid watching E.T. and thinking two things. First, i want my own talking alien and second, I wanted to be in movies...
so I pursued the acting thing most of my early and late teen life, till one day I was sitting in class reading the newspaper and found out there was a movie being filmed in my hometown of Greenville South Carolina. When I found out, I was stoked and talked my buddy into skipping class with me and heading up to where they were shooting. So for about a week I snuck on to set and just hung out and watched the filmmakers do their thing, till I was asked who I was and why I was there.
They were pretty cool about it and let me be a production assistant and that was the beginning of my career behind the camera.
been doing it ever since

DNSLNS:  You've been behind the camera on some pretty cool gigs... music videos, short films, running Steadi for ESPN Primetime but now you've got this project where you're back in front of the camera. What's that all about?

Kris:  Well the hiatus from being in front of the camera was a result of years of too many burgers and beer! So turns out that even when you want to be the "Fat Sidekick", there is still a weigh limit, which I was definitely over. See after college, I took a sabbatical from working out that ended up lasting like 8 years. Well, when you start lugging around a 80 pnd. steadi cam when your 100 pnds overweight...things get a little, well...weighty?
the fact is that I have become a large dude and I am just sick of being a big ole boy' as they say round' here. So after having many a conversations with my friend and executive producer Scott Perkins about me losing weight, we decided to make a documentary about my journey of losing 100 or so pounds...and then RUNNING 26.2 MILES

DNSLNS:  You've done what only a relatively few have done. This won't be your first time running a marathon. Your claim to fame is that you've done it before right?

Kris:  Yea, I ran the Mayors Midnight Sun marathon in Anchorage Alaska at the ripe ole age of 13.

losing_it_folder_cover

DNSLNS:  What's the name of the doc?

Kris:  The name of the doc. is Losing It...get it...LOSING IT???
cause i am losing weight and my mind
get it
huh
do you
Dan????

DNSLNS:  No I didn't get it... thanks so much for clarifying...

Kris:  hahaha

DNSLNS:  sorry for being in host interview mode
ha
but here we go again...
That's a pretty ambitious goal man... is the pressure on? Like do you feel it and all?

Kris:  Like I know in my heart that I can do it, but the mirror is my worst enemy. Like people will say to me, oh man I am starting to see it and I am like, quit patronizing me!
its just hard to see progress in this situation
funny though, its alot like a movie in the sense that you keep hacking away day by day until the end and you have a story that makes sense...unless you suck of course, M. Night Shyamalan...
just saying his last ones have sucked pretty bad

DNSLNS:  "I see dead people..."
What's the routine like though? Suck pretty bad?

Kris:  umm, yeah
its an up at dawn commitment...I am pushing for 5 am everyday, putting in about an hour of cardio after stretching of course, then a crucial diet that is very low in calories and lacking in things like bread, dairy, carbonation...its not like I get to enjoy a nice Steak and Potatoes...I am pretty much a vegan...
and they are mostly liberals and I cant stand liberals
ha...
so i still kick it with chicken
and let me just say this, its not that I dont like liberals, its just women with long arm pit hair really bug me

DNSLNS:  Obviously, you're not going at this alone. Who's on the team? Both for you and your goals but also on the film team...
like you're not just making stuff up... you've got some pretty cool people around you helping you

Kris:  Yeah, my crew is amazing!
Joe Raffield is my producer and he is actually like an "on camera" producer which always makes things fun.
I mean you know the two of us...we dont stop getting at eachother

DNSLNS:  you and joe are like an old married couple

Kris:  yea, we pretty much classify for a civil union in most New England states
then my Director of Photography is Diego Montiel who just might be one of the most talented people that I know. He just gets it!
love that dude
and of course there is Scott, my executive producer, who is also a personal friend...

DNSLNS:  who do you have on board to help you hit the goals so you can run the marathon again?

Kris:  well aside from the love that I am being shown from everyone following me on twitter (aka-filmmakerkimlin) and on facebook, I have a trainer named Chris Wiggins. This guys is awesome! He works mostly with college athletes making the move to play pro ball, so having him on my team and helping me the way that he is, is amazing! He really takes a cool hands on approach and really cares about my well being and how I am coming along with the Doc. Chris just wants to see me succeed more than anything else, to the point that HE IS RUNNING THE MARATHON WITH ME!
so is Scott Perkins by the way
so my team pretty much kicks bootay
but know this...if I miss a work out, they are on my butt!!!
like stink on poo

DNSLNS:  Yesterday we were talking about food on It's Tuesday... Let's Talk. You mentioned some of the changes above and I've seen you be really strict on yourself since all this began. You have a nutristionist and all that as well huh?

Kris:  Yeah, my friend Jan Smith is a Wellness counselor and she has been crucial in setting up cool ideas for me to snack healthy during the day so that I am not in-taking a bunch of calories. But for real bro, she is just strait up about stuff...there is no sugar coating (literally) with her. In our first interview, she was like WOW, you want to do WHAT? You have SO FAR to go. She would just bust out laughing through out the interview, it was hilarious!

DNSLNS:  Thanks for the vote Jan...

Kris:  right!

DNSLNS:  that's cool though that she shoots straight.

Kris:  yeah, i need that

DNSLNS:  a couple more and then we're done

Kris:  im having fun dude
do what you gots to do

DNSLNS:  There's another aspect you were telling me about that I think is one of the coolest and most compelling aspects of the whole thing. It was your idea to bring in a psychologist as part of the team. For the funniest guy in the room... what's that been like. To sit down and talk "for real" especially with the cameras rolling...

Kris:  Wow...man, that has been crazy. I am working with this wonderful eating disorder counselor in Atlanta and she knows how to dig bro. Like it is amazing the things that she can point to that I do to cover up my feelings when it comes to shoveling food in my mouth. Look, I got Irish in me...I already am at a disadvantage for sharing my feelings but at first I thought this chick was nuts telling me that I eat too much because it makes me feel loved. Then we played connect the dots with my past and feelings and it was like WHOA! I eat to feel loved...which might be real bad for the woman I marry...She is in the mood and all the sudden I am like, "did someone say cheesecake?"
haha...

DNSLNS:  no kidding man.. I think it's gonna make for some pretty powerful stuff. I've seen you really taking all this so seriously with a sort of humor as well of course but can't wait to see it all unfold. And even if the cameras weren't rolling... you gotta at least be feeling better already. Making better choices and all that.

Kris:  and I do...i feel so much more energetic since starting!
and sexy

DNSLNS:  BTW.. for everyone out there reading this... everytime, I'm on set with Kris, he's like my little conscience which as been so good for me.

Kris:  oh, your losing it to chunky
ha ha ha ha
i love you man

DNSLNS:  we were in chattanooga a couple weeks ago, shooting a John Tesh concert of all things and there we were counting calories. my wife said we were like a couple of girls and was totaly laughing at us
anyway
real quick... the lowdown on the big finale event of this project. Give me the when, where, and what marathon are you running...

Kris:  Marine Marathon in Washington DC, October 25 2009...yeah, not long

DNSLNS:  Well get after it man. I know there's no crystal ball but when is the doc supposed to drop so everyone can watch?

Kris:  Hopefully spring of next year...we'll probably play the festival circuit and stuff, but we will have more stuff up on the web as soon as I have the site finished @ www.losingitthemovie.com
there will be a daily blog so you can follow me and my progress

DNSLNS:  awesome... any other links where the peeps can hit you up

Kris:  www.kriskimlin.com and of course twitter (filmmakerkimlin) and Facebook.
I will be expanding more and more when the losing it site launches

DNSLNS:  hopefully you'll be shrinking but ok
thanks for the time bro

Kris:  ha ha ha ha ha nice!
thank you...this was fun!

DNSLNS:  much love
thanks so much man

Kris:  no problem dude
